Critical Infrastructure Under Siege: Iranian Hackers Target U.S. Rockwell PLCs

A sophisticated cyber campaign launched by Iranian-linked threat actors on April 7, 2026, is specifically targeting Internet-exposed Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLCs) across U.S. critical infrastructure networks. This campaign represents a significant escalation in state-sponsored cyber operations, with attackers focusing on operational technology (OT) environments where PLCs control physical processes including power generation, water distribution, and industrial manufacturing.

Security researchers have identified coordinated reconnaissance activities targeting Rockwell’s ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLC architectures. The attackers are leveraging known vulnerabilities in firmware versions prior to 33.011, with affected models including ControlLogix 5570, 5580, CompactLogix 5370, and 5380 series controllers.

Organizations must immediately audit all Rockwell Automation deployments, disconnect PLCs from direct Internet access, implement industrial DMZ architectures, and verify that all controllers are running firmware version 33.011 or later.

Industrial AI Deployment Accelerates: Two-Thirds of Organizations in Active Production
