SPAU 140 ABB Power System Protection Unit
Description
The SPAU 140 ABB Power System Protection Unit, part of ABB’s SPACOM series, is a versatile, high-reliability device designed for power system protection and control. Core functions include synchronization check, which verifies matching voltage, phase, and frequency between two independent or interconnected electrical networks; voltage check, which detects if voltage on both sides of a circuit breaker meets preset criteria; and safe circuit breaker closing, which permits breaker operation only when all preset conditions are satisfied. It also provides selective short-circuit and ground fault protection for radial feeders, with integrated overcurrent and ground fault elements that support single, two, or three-phase overcurrent protection, plus non-directional ground fault protection.
Key features include a modular design for easy installation and maintenance, multi-protocol communication interfaces supporting RS232/RS485, and flexible configuration with selectable operating modes and protection functions, including multiple inverse time-delay characteristics (ultra, strong, normal, long inverse time). Built with high-quality materials and advanced manufacturing, it operates reliably in harsh environments, with a working temperature range of -20 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius, 40 ms reset time, 0.98 ms delay response time, and action time accuracy of ±2% of the set value or ±25 ms. It is suitable for applications in power plants, substations, industrial facilities, data centers, and oil and chemical sites, supporting solid, resistance, or impedance grounded power systems.
